    Possible solution: Pete you're the press, so start to hold the enablers responsible. Do your reporter thing, follow the money. Start to really highlight the universities & journals who are supporting this and ultimately benefitting from it. Send them a request for comment on their participation in enabling academic corruption. Ask them what they did wrong and how to fix the problem. Call them out, highlight their names & logos in your videos, bring them individually, squarely into the discussion and ding their prestige every time they are in the chain fault

    this is the research done on cfs, a disease that is so painful we nominally choose self exiting, making it our number one cause of death. the research drugs inaccessible, the trials bunk, the doctors declaring us insane as other, real research confirms our bodies work differently... yall don't know the pain. if u read this far, wear a kn95/n95 or better. protect yourself from covid, the now leading cause of cfs.

    The only real peer review is when you release it out in the wild. It's like videogame testing, you underestimate your players finding ways you didn't think of to break your game. You patch it as people stumble onto them, risking making it less fun (or accurate in case of a paper I guess) if you don't have the correct criterion to know which stuff needs cutting out and which stuff doesn't.

    I would want to do tests for mold exposure, gut biome analysis, micronutrient levels, toxin exposure such as heavy metals, and food and substance sensitivity testing. Mold exposure has been found to be in the best majority of people with chronic fatigue.

    This channel should look at the issues of medical student research in the US. It's a factor for competitive residency applications, and 99.999% of it is garbage. Not even regular garbage, but methodologically backwards garbage. It's all p-hacked because you need more papers on a short timeline (before match applications in third year), with some students having many dozens of research items (abstracts, presentations, papers, etc) all of very poor quality. It's not the students fault, it's a consequence of how competitive residency is. Residency programs have to include more ways to stratify applicants every year, and research items is an easy way to do it. The number of items can be borderline infinite if your integrity is low enough and you're well-connected, making it an easy way to stratify that is likely to remain viable for long periods of time (not tied to any exam, which may go pass/fail, not as subjective as LORs or MSPE). It's a plague on science and on students. Very few students would be so willing to output research like that if they weren't forced to "play the game". No one benefits but the residency program, who gets an easy stratifying measure--which seems so trivial compared to the grand scheme of garbage research.

    Desperate for help, I was recruited into a similar study at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane Australia. My GP who referred me hoped it would be a treatment protocol that would help me. The people in charge of the study also told me the same thing. I had symptoms of ME/CFS but no solid diagnosis. Daily life was a huge challenge and filled with pain, even though I was already doing my best to recover and function 'normally'. I think I was placed in the GET group, as I was told to meet with a physio each week for 'treatment'. I did not receive physiotherapy, however. I was interviewed on my pain levels, function and exercise amount, and told to exercise more. I quit after a few weeks of this, explaining that the 'treatment' and interviews were ineffective, exhausting and unrealistic and I would no longer be participating. I asked that my comments somehow be recorded in the study but I have no idea if they were. I have never been so gaslit or disgusted in the whole time I've had health challenges and disability. The happy conclusion is that I finally got a diagnosis of a TBI/stroke and have been somewhat successfully treated with antiepileptic drugs and actual physio. I now have a much better quality of life. I wish health and wellbeing to all ME/CFS sufferers - elbows out!

    Huh, ive never heard of this, Id like more info on stuff like this, i am almost always exhausted (and in summers, after about 2 hours in heat i will start falling asleep) and when i attempt to actually think about something (like write an email) i just blank over and over. I do get random bursts of energy as well, but then i feel like i dont have enough to do.

  • @foxxxyg
    @foxxxyg 14 годин тому

    I got misdiagnosed with ME/CFS many years ago. I was told to exercise more and so I did. I improved a lot but then fell off during the summer and was told that I needed to exercise harder. I was in the gym over an hour a day and not improving. I was told that “sometimes that’s just how CFS is”. Years later I was diagnosed correctly with POTS and MCAS. I got better because cardio tolerance genuinely helps POTS and the pollen I struggle most with is high in the summer. But to be told that “oh yeah it’s working” then suddenly “oh well sucks to be you” really made me see how poorly CFS patients are treated. My heart goes out to you all.

    I might be contrarian here, but I think academic integrity is stupid AF. When I create research documents for private sector I just copy and paste information I like, dont cite any sources. I only care about the content of what it says not who it comes from. This is probably why I have been banned from academia (among false sexual assult allagations of several girls which I was innocent of)

    Thank you for making this better known. The bar to publication is today quite low. Publication is not an endorsement that the article is correct but it does suggest it was conducted with some degree of standard and conduct. The Lancet editors should explain how this paper got through the review process.

    Thank you SO very much for covering this. I was at an intersection of poor diagnosis and misinformation around CFS/ME in my adolescence when I was facing debilitating OCD with somatic obsessions and agoraphobia, but had extremely low insight. I was written off as having CFS and left without any meaningful therapy for the conditions I did have for years, missing several years of high school. In adulthood I specialized in OCD treatment, so have been plenty aware of how I fell through the cracks of psychiatric diagnosis, but this study highlights how damn primed both the medical and psychological community are to fail both those of us struggling with CFS-adjacent psychiatric symptoms and those who have ME itself. Gah this is such important coverage, thank you for speaking out for communities who've been failed by the fields.

    It's not surprising that the graded exercises group might see an improvement in the 6 minute walking test, but that doesn't actually mean their condition got any better. It's possible that they were able to eke out a bit of extra distance at cost of feeling more tired later. I feel like 6 minutes isn't really a long time

    The ides of “six months or more of unexplained fatigue” as the ONLY criteria for ME/CFS is insane to me. I don’t have ME/CFS but I had YEARS of unexplained fatigue before I got my POTS diagnosis. A combination of slowly-increased exercise and a beta blocker have helped me a TON, because those are good treatments for POTS. Wild to think I could have been included in this study and marked as “recovered” from a condition I don’t have

    graded exercise therapy works great! ...for depression. at my depression's worst I had identical symptoms to ME and probably could have met the criteria for the study. but slowly introducing activity beget the ability to do MORE activity. that doesn't mean that ME can be cured by activity. it means I never had it in the first place.

    I'm a little surprised peer reviewed journal publishers don't check this themselves. There are plenty of software that can find duplicate images and copied text, same as those mentioned in the video, and Google search engine. Specifically, Google image search can find copies of images, even if the image was resized, cropped, rotated, recolored, etc.

    I’m 50. I was first at university in the 90s when there was no political correctness and the words woke didn’t exist. Fast forward to 20 years and the culture of the same universities had changed and for the worse. Critical thinking had evaporated, questioning norms had become towing the party line’s group think. This change in culture has fostered the current culture of junk research where the answer to the hypothesis is a forgone conclusion and the research is structured in such a way to make said questions=answers. The best example i can recall was a lecture where a young “hip” lecturer spouted his personal rhetoric for the two hours. At the end of the lecture he gave the floor to questions where not a single student asked questions or questioned the theme. As one of just a few older students, I questioned my fellow students as to whether they had questions. Without exception they all thought the lecturer was “off course, misguided and his arguments were ill-conceived. When I enquired as to why not one of them brought this up their responses were all similar versions of “we don’t question teachers because we don’t want to be put down or made to feel stupid.”.

    I took care of a man who was lobotomized by the US government and dumped in our very remote and very rural nursing home. He only had 2 visitors a year. A military medical personnel and a high ranking personnel. He was given a once over, interviewed, his chart copied, and that was it. Supposedly he 'knew too much' and the military made sure he would never talk, at all, ever again. All he did, day in and day out, was pace the halls, stop and scream at the top of his lungs, keep pacing, stop and have a silent conversation with an unseen entity, and continue the cycle. Eating, bathing, and toileting were a huge challenge. He was on heaps of medicine. 2 anticonvulsants because he had severe seizures from the lobotomy. He didn't even have his real name.
